Do you often feel mentally fatigued during the day? Does your mental clarity feel low, your thoughts disorganised and your ability to focus decreased? On top of that even the simplest tasks feel burdensome and require more mental energy than they should.
Low mental clarity can have a significant impact on every aspect of your daily life. It can affect your performance at work, your life at home, and even your relationships. When your mind is foggy, it’s easy to lose focus, feel overwhelmed or become anxious. Plus, modern life demands constant attention and exposes us to endless distractions, making it more difficult to maintain mental clarity and truly relax.
In my clinic, I see this issue all the time. Many of my clients struggle with poor concentration and disorganised thinking. They often ask me for a way to improve their mental clarity, and they are usually surprised by my answer. Most people are not aware that one of the most effective tools is also one of the simplest.
So, what do I recommend? If you want to improve your mental clarity, you need to learn how to breathe efficiently. Because breathing does not just affect our oxigen levels, but it regulates the nervous system and can be the key for a more relaxed lifestyle.

The impact of poor breathing habits
Breathing affects your mental clarity, and a correct breathing practice can enhance your focus and lower stress levels. Many people develop poor breathing habits, such as mouth breathing or upper chest breathing. Anyone can develop such poor breathing habits, and in most cases, they don’t realise they are breathing incorrectly until someone points it out.
Bad breathing habits can lead to low mental clarity, brain fog, low concentration levels and mental fatigue, all of which can affect both your personal and work life.
Why proper breathing promotes relaxation
Breathing is closely connected to the nervous system, particularly to the vagus nerve. This very long nerve goes from the brain to the abdomen. It runs down the whole body, connecting to many of the major organs.
Positive breathing habits, such as slow nasal breathing, stimulate the vagus nerve and help regulate the nervous system. This can enhance mental clarity, improve focus and help with stress management. It also supports emotional regulation, improves heart rate and promotes healthy blood circulation.
Positive breathing habits
So, what makes a positive breathing habit? Slow, controlled breathing through the nose is the way to go. Taking too many big breaths can lower the level of carbon dioxide in the blood, greatly reducing oxygen delivery throughout the body (this process is called the Bohr effect). Slower breathing allows the body to use the oxygen in a more efficent way, helping you feel more alert, focused and energised.
Slow and controlled breathing is also key to relaxation. Stress changes the way you breathe: have you ever noticed that during stressful situations your breathing becomes faster and shallower? Whenever you feel stressed, it’s better to slow down your breathing. When you do this, you signal to the nervous system that it is safe to relax.
Making slow nasal breathing a habit is essential. This skill is super helpful not only when you feel stressed but also when you lose focus: if you’re struggling to concentrate, try this: pause for a moment and bring your attention to slow, gentle breaths through your nose.
Nasal breathing is equally vital during sleep. Many people breathe through their mouth at night, but this can lower their sleep quality. Some signs of poor quality sleep are snoring and restlessness during sleep. Since poor sleep can be the cause of brain fog and low energy, breathing through the nose while sleeping is as important as during the day.
